Circular economy and eco-efficiency

We continue to improve in terms of eco-efficiency with a view to reducing the environmental impacts of our operations, and we already recycle or repurpose more than 87% of the hazardous waste we produce.

Of all the water we use, only 3% is fresh water. Furthermore, in water stress areas, we make use of urban wastewater to operate our combined-cycle power plants, saving the equivalent of more than 8,200 Olympic swimming pools over the last three years in Mexico and Spain.

In the last year, we have reduced our energy consumption by more than 8,400 GWh, which is equal to the electricity consumption of two million homes.

In 2018, we started operating two pilot renewable gas plants that transform organic waste into gas of sufficient quality for injection into the grid. This is a perfect example of the circular economy.
