The Galician government considers natural gas an important economic driver. In recent years, it has invested over 90 million euros in developing the gas infrastructure. In upcoming years, it is estimated that 75% of the population will have access natural gas.

The installation of the A Mariña gas pipeline allows Alcoa San Ciprián to power its production processes only with natural gas, moving away from the use of fuel and contributing to the factory’s competitive and environmental sustainability.

Guided depth of over 70 metres and length of 1 kilometre.- The primary gas transmission pipeline was approved by the government of Spain in 2008. It connects with the pre-existing Llanera-Villaba gas pipeline and passes through the municipalities of Ribadeo, Barreiros, Foz, Burela, Cervo, Xove and Viveiro, and is entirely buried one metre below the surface. It was inaugurated on 9 February 2015 by the President of the Government of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, and ex-President of Naturgy, Salvador Gabarró, with the symbolic opening of a valve located in San Cibrao-Cervo.
It was constructed using guided drilling technology, used in construction projects in areas of great environmental interest, specifically the crossing of the River Grande, which flows into the Ribadeo estuary. This drilling project is the longest and deepest performed in Spain in recent years.
In compliance with European, national and local regulation, from our control centre we obtain exact information 24 hours a day on the situation and operation of the gas pipeline, allowing us to control and operate it with complete safety. At present, Ribadeo, Xove, Foz and Burela already have a connection line to the A Mariña gas pipeline. Viveiro is supplied through a LNG plant and is also expected to connect to the gas pipeline.
Sustainability
When the gas pipeline was built, priority was placed on protecting the environment. Appropriate measures were adopted to minimise its potential effects and damages during construction. Once the works were finished, the lands, enclosures and other installations that had been affected were restored to their original state through the regeneration of forest and biofauna.
In compliance with its sustainability policy and in line with its commitment to society , in the areas where it operates, Naturgy is actively involved in numerous sponsorship initiatives and actions.
