The current energy context framing the\u00a0<strong>UNDERGY Project<\/strong>\u00a0reflects the need for a\u00a0<strong>large-scale storage system to manage electricity surpluses from renewable sources<\/strong>\u00a0and provide supply security to the energy system. By simply having sufficient storage capacity, we will be able to manage the seasonal fluctuations in renewable energy.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<strong>UNDERGY Project<\/strong>\u00a0(UNDERground enerGY) will research the\u00a0<strong>technological basis for improving the competitiveness of seasonal renewable energy storage<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>using green hydrogen.<\/strong><\/p><p>UNDERGY proposes activities to harness renewable energy by integrating renewable generation and high-capacity seasonal energy storage into a smart grid based on\u00a0<strong>two levers<\/strong>: \u00a0<\/p><ul><li>the\u00a0<strong>underground storage<\/strong>\u00a0of renewable energy using green H2.<\/li><li>the creation of an\u00a0<strong>efficient energy management<\/strong>\u00a0system.<\/li><\/ul><p>The project fosters activities to harness existing gas and electricity infrastructure grids to achieve the necessary transformation into a 100% renewable distribution network. The penetration of hydrogen as a renewable energy vector and its underground storage are still at an early stage, lending strong innovative characteristics to this project.<\/p><p>The UNDERGY Project is being undertaken by a\u00a0<strong>consortium led by\u00a0Petroleum Oil &amp; Gas Espa\u00f1a\u00a0<\/strong>(Naturgy subsidiary)<strong>\u00a0alongside another five companies<\/strong>: Gas Natural Comercializadora (Grupo Naturgy), Ayterra, Gessal, H2B2 and T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas. To do so, we will receive support from the National H2 Centre, the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the University of Salamanca.<\/p><p>In terms of underground research, the project will focus on validating conversion of our\u00a0<strong>Palancares gas deposit into an underground green hydrogen storage facility<\/strong>. Green H2 seasonal storage capacity in Spain<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2601\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2601\"><p>The goal of this activity, led by the company Gessal, is to research and determine the\u00a0<strong>green hydrogen geological energy storage capacity\u00a0<\/strong>in the peninsular subsoil, finally creating a tool to enable the study of potential sites and suitable geological structures (resources, feasibility, potential).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2602\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2602\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-down\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Activity 2. Pilot structure for green H2 storage<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2602\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2602\"><p><strong>Petroleum Oil &amp; Gas Espa\u00f1a\u00a0<\/strong>will address the\u00a0<strong>feasibility of green H2 storage on a pilot structure<\/strong>. A depleted natural gas field located in Aljarafe (Seville) will serve on a laboratory scale, to investigate the reactions of the mixture of gases (H2-CO2-CH4) and containing rocks. In addition to the feasibility of storing H2, the potential methanation that could occur in the subsoil due to the joint injection of green H2 and captured CO2 will be investigated. Environmental, hydrogeological, geotechnical and geomorphological aspects will be addressed, including seismic hazard, taking into account the processes of electrolysis and gas transfer in surface installations (H2-CO2-CH4). The project is expected to last 36 months, until the end of 2025.<\/p><p>Additionally, Trinity Energy Storage and eight leading research organizations are also collaborating: the Santa B\u00e1rbara Foundation, the National Hydrogen Center, the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (CIEMAT), the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the University of La Coru\u00f1a (LAMEROC), AICIA, and Tecnalia.
