Naturgy commissions its first photovoltaic plant in the Region of Murcia with the capacity to supply 21,000 homes

  • The Jumilla plant has a capacity of 34 MW and will produce 73 GWh of clean energy per year, avoiding the emission of more than 46,400 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Naturgy has commissioned its first photovoltaic plant in the Region of Murcia. Located in the municipality of Jumilla, the facility has a capacity of 34 MW and will produce 73 GWh of renewable energy per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 21,000 homes. This production will prevent the emission of 46,400 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to taking 19,300 vehicles off the road, and will accelerate the energy transition in the region.

An investment of 26 million euros was required to commission the Jumilla plant and it has generated around 250 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase. The new plant consists of 62,466 photovoltaic panels and will have a lifetime of 30 years.

The installation has been designed taking into account its environmental and landscape integration. Proof of this is the wide range of preventive, corrective and compensatory environmental measures that have been implemented, such as the creation of a reserve area of 144 hectares in plots in the vicinity for the rotation of rainfed crops; or the installation of 10 nesting boxes in different parts of the plant, among other actions.

A compensatory measure has also been implemented for the community consisting of the supply, assembly and maintenance of a self-consumption installation in the buildings or facilities of institutions or non-governmental organisations of a social and humanitarian nature in the municipality of Jumilla, including the J. García Carrión Foundation, consisting of self-consumption at its facilities in service since August 2024.

Commitment to Energy Transition

Naturgy remains committed to promoting the energy transition and the development of renewable projects. The group has 7.3 GW of installed capacity internationally. During 2024, the company commissioned 842 MW, of which 271 MW corresponds to projects in Spain, 555 MW in Australia and 14 MW in Latin America.

To develop this new renewable capacity, the company invested a total of 926 million euros: 374 million euros in Spain, 311 million in Australia, 240 million in the United States and 1 million euros in Latin America. These investments confirm its commitment to a more sustainable energy mix, as well as its commitment to the energy transition, without neglecting the fundamental objectives of value creation and growth for each of the businesses as well as ESG objectives.

In addition, the group currently has around 1.6 GW of renewable capacity under construction, 838 MW of which are planned in Spain, as well as 360 MW in Australia and 387 MW in the United States.
