Nedgia, the Naturgy group gas distributor, has achieved an important milestone in its energy transformation by signing applications to inject green gas (biomethane) into its network for a volume equivalent to the consumption of one million homes.
Biomethane is a green, 100% renewable gas obtained from organic waste, fully interchangeable with conventional natural gas. Its development not only contributes to the fight against climate change, but also boosts the circular economy, the creation of local employment and the valorisation of resources in the rural environment.
Specifically, the company already has a portfolio of 90 projects that have applied to connect to its infrastructure in the short and medium term to be able to inject biomethane, a gas of renewable origin that is key to advancing an efficient and effective energy transition.
This portfolio of projects adds up to a green gas injection capacity of 5,025 GWh/year, which will be thirteen times the current capacity of 371 GWh/year from a total of 13 operating plants already connected. This year alone, the company has connected a total of 5 facilities to its network in regions such as Galicia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Navarra.
The 90 applications for connection are spread over a total of 9 autonomous regions, providing an opportunity for these territories to make progress in the management of their waste and advance in the energy transition. Catalonia and Castilla y León lead in number of applications with a total of 22 injection contracts signed, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (15) and Andalusia (11).
“Gas networks are essential for the development of green gas and its application in driving the energy transition. The connection of new biomethane plants to this infrastructure is great news for consumers, providing them with an efficient and effective opportunity to decarbonise their demand without having to do anything, as green gas is compatible with their boilers,” explains Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia.
Gas networks are essential to guarantee Spain’s energy supply and achieve socially and economically sustainable decarbonisation, facilitating the transition to green gases such as biomethane. The existing gas infrastructure is 100% compatible with biomethane injection and at least 20% green hydrogen blending, allowing for an efficient and safe transition.
