Naturgy expands its biomethane project portfolio by signing a major partnership with ID Energy Group for the development of 20 new plants in Spain. The agreement illustrates the group’s firm commitment to lead the promotion of renewable gases as a strategic vector to speed up the energy transition.
The partnership amounts to a planned investment of more than 500 million euros. Projects included in the agreement will have an estimated production capacity of 1,600 GWh per year, which will decarbonise the equivalent of the consumption of 320,000 households and make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in Spain. Plants will be spread around the country and will be operational between 2026 and 2028.
With this agreement, Naturgy and ID Energy Group consolidate their role as leaders in the renewable energy sector, promoting a more sustainable and circular economy. Producing this green gas from waste will contribute not only to the reduction of emissions, but also to energy independence, biofertiliser generation and the optimisation of available resources.
“This partnership accelerates the development of biomethane in Spain. We share the same ‘end-to-end‘ vision as ID Energy, which also brings us its experience with biomethane in other European countries,” explains José Luis Gil, Managing Director of Renewable Gases at Naturgy.
Julio Espadas, Managing Director of ID Energy, highlights that “having an industrial partner of the stature of Naturgy is a great opportunity for our expansion thanks to its experience and leadership in the energy sector, with a solid track record in the renewable energy and green gas market”.
Naturgy, leader in renewable gas
Naturgy leads the promotion of renewable gases in the Iberian Peninsula, both in short-term biomethane production and distribution, and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the energy mix in the medium to long term. The company is well positioned to leverage the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation and is prepared to roll out significant investment and resources in this business. Its current Strategic Plan 2025-2027 foresees an investment of more than 1 billion euros in biomethane.
Naturgy manages a broad portfolio of biomethane projects throughout the territory in different stages of development and already has three production plants in operation. In the coming months, another two facilities will be added that are in advanced development or construction in Utiel (Valencia) and Utrera (Seville).
Naturgy recently signed a strategic partnership with Hispania Silva, a company specialising in waste recovery with extensive experience in the agro-livestock sector, to build at least 20 or up to 30 biomethane production plants. The plants built by this alliance, which will be distributed throughout Spain and will be operational before 2030, will have the capacity to generate 2.5 TWh of biomethane per year, equivalent to the consumption of 500,000 homes. Subsequently, the company signed with Bioeco Energías the development of new facilities with a joint capacity to produce more than 500 GWh per year.
ID Energy Group, national leader in Biomethane Plant Development.
As part of its commitment to a sustainable future, ID Energy Group is strongly promoting the national biomethane and biogas sector, with more than 100 active projects in different phases. A comprehensive approach and vertical structure allows it to offer efficient solutions adapted to the needs of each environment, consolidating its position as a key player in the global energy transition.
ID Energy Group not only drives the energy transition, it builds it from start to finish. The end-to-end approach makes it possible to offer the entire value chain in renewable energies and green gases, such as biomethane: From land acquisition, identifying the best locations for project development, all engineering and development work, to plant construction, operation and maintenance, ID Energy Group executes each project with the highest quality and sustainability, optimising the performance and useful life of each installation.
Its experience and international success is its guarantee. In Poland, it has designed, developed and built a portfolio of four biogas plants: Two successfully sold, demonstrating the solidity of our projects. One in operation, generating clean and efficient energy. One under construction, expanding the commitment to the circular economy.
ID Energy Group continues to consolidate its position as the best strategic partner for decarbonisation in all energy efficiency sectors and continues to take solid steps in this direction.
