Naturgy has signed a strategic alliance with Hispania Silva, a company specialising in waste recovery with extensive experience in the agro-livestock sector, to build at least 20 biomethane production plants, which could rise up to 30.
The plants built by this alliance, which will be distributed throughout Spain and will be operational before 2030, will have the capacity to generate 2.5 TWh of biomethane per year, equivalent to the consumption of 500,000 homes. They will also contribute to the decarbonisation of our economy, reducing 450,000 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting 49 million pine trees.
This partnership will produce biomethane from organic waste, transforming waste into a clean energy source. It will also take advantage of synergies between the two companies to offer a comprehensive approach, covering the entire renewable gas value chain, from waste management to biomethane.
An alliance to speed up renewable gas production
According to José Luis Gil, Manager Director Naturgy Renewable Gases at Naturgy, this alliance is a further step towards taking advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases for the decarbonisation of our customers. Together they continue to analyse the possibility of Naturgy entering into waste management: “We understand that only by being present in all links of the renewable gas value chain will we be able to provide the best service to our customers,” Gil said.
“The alliance with Naturgy allows us to significantly increase our size, which will result in a better service to our customers and remarkable efficiency in our operations,” said Ignacio Sanchiz, Chairman of Hispania Silva.
Biomethane produced at these plants will be distributed through existing natural gas distribution networks, both to households and industries, to offer them a decarbonisation solution without the need for additional investments in their boilers and energy installations. At the same time, these projects will contribute to the circular economy, creating job, benefiting local economies and returning organic, zero-kilometre fertilisers and non-polluting irrigation water to the countryside.
Naturgy, leader in renewable gas
Naturgy aims to be the leading company in the promotion of renewable gases in the Iberian Peninsula, both in short-term production and distribution of biomethane and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the energy mix in the medium- to long-term. The company is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation and is ready to deploy significant investments and resources in this business.
Naturgy manages a broad portfolio of biomethane projects throughout the territory in different stages of development and already has three production plants in operation. In the coming months, another two facilities will be added that are in advanced development or construction in Utiel (Valencia) and Utrera (Seville).
