Naturgy becomes the first promotional partner of the Spanish Hydrogen Association

  • This move will reinforce the collaboration between the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) and Naturgy in carrying out promotional activities, innovation and development in the sector of this energy.
  • One of the advantages of becoming an AeH2 promotional partner is that Naturgy’s commitment to developing clean and renewable energy will garner more visibility.

Naturgy, a member of the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2), has become the first promotional partner of AeH2, demonstrating its strong commitment to developing renewable gas and hydrogen. Through this move, both organisations reinforce their collaboration regarding the innovation, development and use of hydrogen, therefore promoting the implementation of these technologies.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Hydrogen Association, a non-profit organisation, continues making progress on its main objective: encouraging the development of hydrogen technologies as an energy carrier and promoting its use for industrial and commercial purposes.

Due to this agreement, Naturgy will receive a series of additional benefits and rights as a promotional partner. These include a special mention in its news, activities and projects relating to the hydrogen sector, special discounts and preferential participation in the presentations and conferences organised by the AeH2, support in external communication activities relating to hydrogen technologies, and occasional support in matters relating the association’s objectives.

Hydrogen technologies and fuel cell batteries significantly contribute to the decarbonisation of the main sectors of the economy. This is why hydrogen emerges as a versatile and key energy carrier of the future in Europe, because it can lead to a more environmentally friendly and emissions-free economy.

Therefore, Naturgy’s step forward to become the first promotional partner shows great progress because it displays the sectors commitment to hydrogen technologies. AeH2 offers leading entities in Spain an additional medium to

strengthen their leadership and the good image associated to it. This will result in greater visibility and impact, leading to better results in the sector. Javier Brey, Chairman of AeH2, stressed the importance of Naturgy’s commitment in becoming a promotional partner: “It will serve to boost all the initiatives we promote here at the Spanish Hydrogen Association, encouraging different activities and projects and further disseminating the importance of hydrogen as an energy carrier.”

Naturgy and hydrogen

Hydrogen can be produced from different sources and can be stored and distributed to consumption points through natural gas networks. It can be used for industrial and domestic purposes, as well as in transport with fuel cells. It is produced via electrolysis, preferably using excess renewable power (green hydrogen), and can also be obtained from natural gas and carbon capture (blue hydrogen). Both technologies have a promising future that is becoming a reality in Europe, and they will enable emissions-free hydrogen to be injected into the gas network, which will reduce CO2 emissions in the energy and transportation sector with its use in mobility. Additionally, methanation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide derived from biomethane production or biomass uses will generate a solution with negative emissions.

The incorporation of growing amounts of biomethane and hydrogen into the natural gas network is a key target for Nedgia (the gas distribution company of the Naturgy group) as it seeks to move towards cleaner energy sources in the energy transition.

Hydrogen will be an essential interconnection and flexibility element for the electricity and gas networks as it will allow both energies to be exchanged through Power to Gas (P2G), Gas to Power (G2P), and seasonal storing of large volumes in the natural gas network. This will make it easier to manage and optimise the electrical system.

Naturgy is currently working on two main research lines in the field of hydrogen transportation through natural gas networks. The first is injecting hydrogen at lower percentages. The second is methanation of hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide that can be turned into synthetic methane, a product that could be injected into the natural gas network without restrictions.

Hence, Naturgy’s new role as the AeH2 promotional partner is especially relevant to energise the projects the company has been developing for some time, with the aim of ensuring that the benefits of hydrogen technologies have an impact on society.

About Naturgy

Naturgy has around 18 million clients in 30 countries and is one of the leading multinational companies in the gas and electricity sector, making it the main natural gas distribution company in the Iberian peninsula. The company provides personalised solutions to its customers aimed at meeting their energy requirements while improving their competitiveness through innovation, a commitment to energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

About AeH2 (www.aeh2.org)

The Spanish Hydrogen Association is a non-profit organisation whose main objective is to encourage the development of hydrogen technologies as an energy carrier and promote its use for industrial and commercial purposes. Since 2002, the organisation has been promoting both the environmental and industrial benefits that would come from the long-term use of hydrogen as an energy carrier.

The AeH2 consists of a group of companies, public and private institutions, and people, who are all working towards the same end goal as the association. The initiatives promoted by the AeH2 include the Spanish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform (PTE HPC), a project protected by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry and Competition.
