Naturgy to supply renewable gas to Aena to boost the decarbonisation of its airports

  • The contract includes the sale of some 83 GWh of natural gas over the next two years, of which at least 20 GWh will be biomethane. This will allow the airport operator to reduce emissions in its airport network and make progress in terms of sustainability.
  • With this agreement, Naturgy expands its portfolio of renewable gas contracts and positions itself as a leading company in production, distribution and marketing.

Naturgy will supply renewable gas to Aena to boost the decarbonisation of its airport network. The agreement reached by the two companies includes the supply of some 83 GWh of natural gas over the next two years, of which at least 20 GWh will be biomethane, with which the airport manager will significantly reduce its emissions linked to thermal energy consumption and make progress in decarbonisation by consuming sustainable and competitive energy.

The biomethane supplied to Aena will be produced at Naturgy’s plants from the treatment of waste from very different sources. The volume supplied would be equivalent to the gas consumption of around 4,000 households and will be used by the airport operator to heat terminals. With qualities similar to those of natural gas, this green gas is set to play a strategic role in the energy transition.

“This agreement illustrates that biomethane is already a reality within our reach to promote a just energy transition, especially in industrial sectors where it is emerging as the best solution to reduce emissions without losing competitiveness,” explains María Higueras, Industrial Market Manager at Naturgy.

Naturgy thus expands its portfolio of renewable gas contracts and positions itself as a leading company in production, distribution and marketing. The Group has already signed supply agreements with other industrial groups such as Inditex and Lecta. Renewable gas supplied by Naturgy has Guarantees of Origin and Sustainability Test certificates so that its customers can reduce the emissions derived from their activity and meet their sustainability objectives.

Naturgy, leader in renewable gas

Naturgy aims to be the leading company in the promotion of renewable gases in the Iberian Peninsula, both in short-term production and distribution of biomethane and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the energy mix in the medium to long term. The company is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation and is ready to deploy significant investments and resources in this business.

Naturgy manages a broad portfolio of biomethane projects throughout the territory in different stages of development and already has three production plants in operation. In the coming months, another two facilities will be added that are in advanced development or construction in Utiel (Valencia) and Utrera (Seville).

In addition, Naturgy recently signed a strategic alliance with Hispania Silva, a company specialising in waste recovery with extensive experience in the agro-livestock sector, to build at least 20 or up to 30 biomethane production plants.  The plants built by this alliance, which will be distributed throughout Spain and will be operational before 2030, will have the capacity to generate 2.5 TWh of biomethane per year, equivalent to the consumption of 500,000 homes. They will also contribute to the decarbonisation of our economy, reducing 450,000 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting 49 million pine trees.
