Naturgy will supply renewable gas to the Lecta group to boost the decarbonisation of its production centres

• The paper group will integrate biomethane into its processes to accelerate the reduction of its emissions in an efficient way.
• This is the second major industrial agreement for the supply of this renewable gas signed by Naturgy after the one signed in January with Inditex.

Naturgy and the Lecta Group have signed a renewable gas supply agreement that will facilitate the efficient decarbonisation of the industrial group’s activity. Biomethane, a renewable gas obtained from the treatment of different types of waste with qualities similar to those of natural gas, will be used by Lecta’s production centres located in Leitza (Navarra) and Zaragoza. This is the second major industrial agreement for the sale of biomethane by Naturgy after the one signed last January with Inditex.

The renewable gas supplied by Naturgy has the Guarantees of Origin and Sustainability Tests certified so that the paper group can offset the emissions derived from its activity and meet its commitments in terms of sustainability. This agreement represents an important milestone as the first major paper company in Naturgy’s customer portfolio to use biomethane in its production processes.

The supply volume signed between the parties is equivalent to the annual gas consumption of more than 800 households and will avoid the emission of 740 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, which is a volume of emissions similar to that of 500 cars.

Renewable gas, and biomethane in particular, must play an essential role in the energy transition. According to a report by Sedigas and PwC, Spain has the potential to produce 163 TWh per year, a figure equivalent to almost half of the country’s natural gas consumption. For that reason, promotion of its production and consumption is currently one of the most efficient ways to boost the decarbonisation of the energy sector.

The Lecta Group is firmly committed to efficiency, decarbonisation and the circular economy. Signing this contract with Naturgy is part of the decarbonisation process undertaken by the group to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of its production units in Spain.

Naturgy, leader in renewable gas

Naturgy aims to be the leading company in promoting renewable gases in Spain, both in the production and distribution of biomethane in Spain in the short term, and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the energy mix in the medium term. The company is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation and is ready to deploy significant investments and resources in this business.

In relation to biomethane, Naturgy manages a broad portfolio of projects throughout Spain at different stages of development and it already has three production plants of its own in operation at the WWTP of Bens (A Coruña), Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona) and Vila-Sana (Lleida). These will be joined in the coming months by two other facilities that are at an advanced stage of development or under construction in Utiel (Valencia) and Utrera (Seville).

Nedgia, the Naturgy Group’s gas distributor, is the leading company in the sector in Spain, where it operates in 10 autonomous communities and 1,150 municipalities. It has more than 5.5 million supply points, representing 70% of the country’s consumers, to whom it safely and efficiently supplies natural gas and renewable gases, biomethane and hydrogen through its more than 57,000 kilometres of networks.
